Community health workers (CHWs) play a crucial role in improving the health of historically marginalized populations by connecting healthcare systems with these communities. Lessons learned from CHW initiatives during the COVID-19 pandemic can guide reforms in national healthcare policies, including proposed changes to the CMS’s Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (CY24 PFS), in the USA. Despite being undervalued, CHWs can significantly contribute to ongoing efforts for health equity. Based on a literature review, this report highlights key obstacles, opportunities, and policy recommendations to support CHWs, emphasizing the need for their inclusion in federal policy initiatives beyond public health crises.
