This systematic review sought to investigate how primary health care (PHC) principles in CHW programs impact health outcomes in low- and middle-income countries. Four PHC principles were included in the review: universal health care, community participation, intersectoral coordination, and appropriateness of services. Authors screened 281 papers, and included 26 for review. After review, authors found that universal health care and community participation were the most common principles in CHW programs. In contrast, intersectoral coordination was a component of only one CHW program. Overall, authors found that PHC principles were inconsistently implemented in CHW programs across LMICs. In the future, strategies may be developed to ensure better integration of PHC principles into CHW programs where outstanding gaps remain.
