This study sought to determine the number of health workers needed for primary care services in Cross River State, Nigeria. Using the Workload Indicators of Staffing Need, or WISN, method, authors cataloged the number of nurses, midwives, community health officers, and community health extension workers across the 196 wards in Cross River State. Researchers found that there was a significant shortage of healthcare workers; Cross River State had only 40 percent of required nurses and midwives, and only 60 percent of CHEWs needed to provide primary health services. The results of this study reflect the global lack of skilled health workers and demonstrate the need to attract more workers to the community health space.
