The National Association of Community Health Workers (NACHW) conducted a survey in 2021 to better understand the work and challenges faced by Community Health Workers (CHWs) across the U.S. The survey gathered responses from 867 CHWs, revealing insights into their employment status, overtime pay, and views on whether their wages are fair and sufficient. The results showed that 83% of CHWs work full-time, while the remaining 17% work part-time, per diem, or volunteer. Addressing wage inequalities is crucial for the well-being and retention of CHWs, and it reinforces their role as respected professionals in their communities. The findings highlight the need for action to improve CHWs’ work conditions and support their essential contributions to public health.
