This review examined how competency-based education is used in training community health workers (CHWs). Researchers analyzed 236 studies published between 2010 and 2023, mainly from high-income countries like the U.S. Most studies focused on small-scale training programs, with an emphasis on preventive health services. Effective strategies included adapting training for low-literacy CHWs, incorporating local cultural contexts, and involving CHWs in curriculum design. However, training was often discussed separately from broader support systems like career development. The findings highlight the need for tailored, practical training programs and further research on how education improves CHW skills and long-term effectiveness.
