This study assessed the effectiveness of community health workers (CHWs) in detecting oral cancer and potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) through visual screening in South Asia and Southeast Asia. A systematic review and meta-analysis of 12 studies found that CHWs identified 8% of cases as suspicious and 92% as normal. The screenings had a sensitivity of 75% and specificity of 97%. The diagnostic odds ratio was 24.52, indicating high diagnostic accuracy. The results suggest that trained CHWs can effectively screen for oral cancer in the community, helping to identify cases early and refer patients for further care.
