The authors of this paper review the factors needed for successful institutionalization of CHWs, using Brazil as a case study. They argue that a focus on adequate compensation of CHWs, protecting CHW autonomy, and improvement of community health system capacity are crucial to consider in the institutionalization process of CHW programs. These findings highlight key areas for governments and CHW program managers to consider when developing CHW programs.
