This journal article explores the use of task shifting in behavioral health care, where non-clinicians take on certain roles traditionally performed by licensed clinicians. It discusses successful task-shifting models in two U.S. government health systems: the Defense Health Agency and the Veterans Health Administration. The potential for other health care systems to adopt similar approaches, utilizing community health workers and other trained paraprofessionals, is highlighted. Recommendations based on lessons learned from these models are provided to overcome barriers and expand access to behavioral health care.
