Increasing access to perinatal community health workers (CHWs) is seen as a solution to disparities in maternal outcomes. These CHWs offer support throughout the perinatal period, including prenatal and postpartum care, crucial for those facing socioeconomic or systemic barriers. The US government’s new Transforming Maternal Health Model aims to expand access to perinatal CHWs, recognizing their importance. Drawing from experiences in California, key recommendations for policymakers include adequate reimbursement rates for CHWs, flexibility in payment, program coordination, standardized data collection, and providing support and training to prevent burnout among CHWs. These strategies aim to ensure sustainable and impactful perinatal care programs.
