In March 2023, community health workers (CHWs) played a key role in detecting and responding to an outbreak of Marburg Virus Disease (MVD). They first reported unexplained deaths, which were later confirmed as MVD. CHWs from high-risk areas were trained on the disease, equipped with protective gear, and helped raise awareness, educate the public, and offer psychosocial support. Their efforts reached community members in homes, public places, schools, and worship centers. The outbreak had nine confirmed cases and six deaths (66.7% fatality rate). The study highlights the importance of training and supporting CHWs in outbreak response, recommending their formal integration and paid roles in health systems for future emergencies.
