This study focuses on those deployed in early 2005and have worked for over six months, with the overall objective of assessing the working conditions of HEW and their job satisfaction.
An in-depth field study was carried out on 60 HEW in 51 health posts (HP) from six regions, 23 zones and 26 woredas.
Major problems identified were:
- – long distances and poor transportation and communication facilities.
- – Challenges in harmonizing the staffing pattern at the HP level
- – Lack of guideline for time-use, work schedule and relationship with the community (leadership).; relationship with other health workers at the community level, on career structure, transfer, leave absences etc.
- – Reporting and health management information system in general is weak
- – the referral system is almost inexistent
- – lack of curative care highly demanded by the communities.
Remark:
- – Sample size too small to be representative of the population
- – Most of the problems are confirmed in other studies though
- Except lack of guideline – there is a well elaborated guideline depicting the tasks and expectations of each member of the health system prepared by MOH-Ethiopia. Problem may be at the implementation level.
