This study explored the use of pulse oximeters by community health workers (CHWs) in rural Burundi to help diagnose childhood illnesses like pneumonia. CHWs were trained to use the oximeters during home visits for children aged 6-59 months. After eight weeks, CHWs and caregivers reported that the devices were useful and easy to store, but there were challenges in using the devices, especially in measuring things like breathing rate and oxygen levels. Child agitation also made it difficult to get accurate readings. The study suggests more training and techniques to calm children could improve results. While the devices were valued, they may be more effective at health facilities.
